Photoperiod feminized cannabis seeds should give rise to about 95% female plants. Whether you grow them indoors or outdoors you should get virtually all female plants from your seeds. Female plants are the only ones that produce the sought-after buds. For most growers, feminized seeds are far more convenient than regular seeds. Regular seeds produce roughly even numbers of male and female plants, meaning the grower has to eventually cull half their plants. Feminized seeds are sometimes referred to as photoperiod feminized seeds. They start to bloom (and begin bud production) when the plant senses a reduced amount of daily light - either indoors or outdoors.
Dutch Passion pioneered the production of feminized cannabis seeds in the 1990s, revolutionizing cannabis cultivation. Committed to maintaining the highest industry standards, we remain a quality leader with 100 cannabis cups and numerous industry awards for our exceptional breeding and original genetics.
Both indoor and outdoor growers can choose from indica seeds, sativa seeds or hybrid feminized seeds. And because we want to enable you to make informed decisions and achieve optimal results in your cultivation efforts, all of our strains come with accurate and thorough genetic descriptions.
Feminized seeds are often the go-to cannabis seed type for growers of all types. The best strains deliver 20-25%+ THC levels with thick, dank pungency and stress-busting effects. Their consistency in producing female plants ensures optimal yields and a more manageable cultivation experience.

Buy quality feminized seeds and you should have a straightforward grow experience in any grow medium. Some strains are better suited than others to the SOG method and SCROG method, so check with your seedbank if you have specific requirements. Likewise, some strains will respond better than others to high stress training and low stress training. If the choice of feminized seeds is baffling, try to narrow down your choice to a few seed banks with solid reputations.
Indoor feminized seeds are available with a huge choice of indica, sativa or hybrid genetics.
The best strains offer 20-25%+ THC levels, sublime psychoactive effects & delicious taste.
Popular with medical/recreational growers of all experience levels.
Specialist medical strains available with high levels of CBG, CBD & THCV.
Take around 3-4 months to grow from feminized seed to harvest.
Typical yields around 3-4oz for soil grown plants indoors. Several times that with coco or hydroponics.
The best genetics combine heavy yields, powerful effects and connoisseur flavor/aroma.
Quality feminized seed varieties should grow well in all grow mediums, soils and soil/coco blends. Remember that cannabis thrives when the roots have an aerated, moist and nutritious grow environment. Many find that air pots and felt sacks give great results and a naturally wide latitude towards the perils of waterlogged roots (one of the most common errors, along with over-feeding). Substituting some of your soil for coco fiber is a common way of increasing aeration in the soil mix.
Any nutrients should work well, whether they are bottled mineral nutrients or organic. The challenge is to keep your feminized seed varieties in the nutrient sweet spot - free from the dangers of over feeding or under feeding. For those that struggle with correct dosing of bottled mineral nutrients, slow-release organic nutrients (BioTabs are especially recommended) are an easy alternative.
Aim to keep lights-on temperatures around 75-77F, with temperatures a few degrees cooler during lights out. Humidity during bloom should be kept as low as possible - 45%RH or below to deter mold/bud rot.
Most growers use an 18/6 or 24/0 light cycle during veg and a 12/12 light cycle for bloom. Once in bloom most feminized seed varieties take around 10 weeks until they are ready for harvest.
Water your plants only when needed, avoiding over-watering and over-feeding. Cannabis roots need a certain level of oxygenation to survive, they will rot in waterlogged conditions. Some growers have enough experience to know when to water their plants at each stage of growth. Other growers will assess the watering requirements by lifting the grow container, knowing the ‘weight’ of a dry container that needs water. But many, including expert growers, have a soil moisture meter in each grow container so they know precisely when to water, these are highly recommended.
Break your grow into 3 stages; germination/seedling, veg & bloom. Try to prepare so that your plant is in the nutrient and optical sweet spot at each stage of growth. This means knowing your LED hanging heights/power levels and understanding nutritional requirements.
Indoor growing allows you complete control over your grow environment, temperatures, LED lighting & nutrition. This allows the serious indoor grower the opportunity to grow crops of the highest quality. One potential downside of growing feminized photoperiod strains outdoors is that you could lose the entire crop if the plants don’t finish before the bad winter weather arrives. Dutch Passion offers one of the most extensive collection of premium outdoor feminized seeds. Always make sure to pick genetics tailored for your climate and grow style.
Greenhouse growers enjoy great conditions to grow monster-size plants. The greenhouse protects your plants from the worst early/late season weather as well as all the storms in-between. Greenhouses can also be fitted with black-out blinds allowing growers to ‘force’ a 12/12 light schedule and initiate bloom far earlier than normal. Beware that some pests, such as aphids, can spread quickly in a greenhouse without natural predators. Periodic release of beneficial insects in greenhouses can help keep pests under control.
Manipulating the growth characteristics of your plants is a significant benefit of using photoperiod feminized cannabis seeds. SCROG growers can keep plants in the vegetative stage until the SCROG screen is fully developed.
SOG (Sea of Green) growers prefer numerous plants with large main blooms and minimal vegetative growth. Feminized seed varieties allow the indoor grower full control over their grow and the timing of bloom (something that autoflower seeds can’t offer).
Indoor growers usually germinate their feminized seeds and initially grow them for around 4-6 weeks under 18-24 hours of indoor daily light. During this period they undergo cannabis vegetative growth, producing leaves, branches and roots - but no buds. This keeps the seedlings safe from inclement weather/pests while they are young and at their most vulnerable. The cannabis plants can be gradually acclimatised to outdoor life before being planted out when the weather is sufficiently warm.
Understanding and managing plant stretch, especially with a limited vertical space, is crucial. Feminized photoperiod strains can experience significant vertical growth during their transition to flowering, which can impact light exposure and space utilization. Properly anticipating and controlling stretch ensures optimal light penetration, prevents overcrowding, and maximizes yield potential. Techniques like topping, low-stress training, and reducing veg growth can effectively manage stretch.
Identifying potential hermaphroditic cannabis plants (hermies) is essential for growers to ensure high-quality yields. Hermaphroditic plants can produce both male and female flowers, leading to unwanted pollination and seedy buds, which diminishes the potency and quality of the harvest. Regular inspection and early identification allow growers to remove or isolate hermas, preserving the integrity of the crop. This practice is vital for maintaining a controlled growing environment and achieving optimal results.
Growing with feminized seeds is straightforward and easy. Your main task is to keep your plants in good health through the veg & bloom phase. Choose solid, proven strains from a trustworthy seed company that does their own quality breeding. You can be self-sufficient in your recreational/medical needs for a fraction of the costs of a dispensary/dealer and produce excellent quality buds. What’s more, it’s a rewarding and enjoyable hobby!
How are feminized seeds produced?
Usually a carefully bred/selected mother plant is pollinated using pollen from a reversed female. This pollen, sometimes referred to as ‘feminized pollen’ produces seeds that give rise to 95% female offspring. A reversed female is a high THC female plant that has been chemically forced to become male. Once mature, the ‘female’ pollen is collected and dusted onto pure female plants that are usually in early/mid bloom
What is the difference between feminized and autoflower seeds?
Feminized seed varieties have to be forced into indoor bloom with a 12/12 light cycle. Outdoors they start to bloom around August as the day-length starts to shorten signifying the onset of fall. Autoflower seed varieties, however, begin to bloom automatically when they are around 4-5 weeks old, irrespective of the light cycle or whether it’s an indoor/outdoor setting.
How to germinate cannabis feminized seeds?
You can germinate them directly in the grow medium, or you can try the ultra-reliable damp cotton pad cannabis seed germination method.
How long does it take feminized seeds to germinate?
Normally feminized seeds germinate within 2-3 days using the damp cotton pad method. But occasionally take up to 1-2 weeks in soil.
How fast do feminized seeds grow?
Indica, or indica-leaning hybrids, often have short bushy structures with less vertical growth/internodal stretch than sativa feminized seed varieties. The fastest growth comes during early bloom as the plants stretch, especially those with vigorous sativa genetics which can double/triple their height during bloom. Be sure to research your cannabis seed purchases to ensure they suit both you and your grow room.
