What are regular cannabis seeds?

Regular cannabis seeds give rise to roughly 50% male plants and 50% female plants after they have been germinated. However buds only grow on female plants. Male plants produce pollen, but no buds.

When grown indoors or outdoors, plants grown from regular seeds will eventually show signs of being either male or female. Male plants are normally chopped down/removed to prevent their pollen producing potentially hundreds of seeds in the buds. The female plants are nurtured until the buds are fully ripened and then harvested.

Regular cannabis seeds were the only option for growers until Dutch Passion’s founder, Henk van Dalen, discovered how to make feminized seeds in the 1990’s. This discovery changed cannabis cultivation for millions of home/professional growers.

Today regular cannabis seeds have been largely superseded by feminized seeds and autoflower seeds. These days, regular seeds only account for around 2% of total cannabis seed sales. But for old-school growers, breeders and many professional growers, regular seeds are still the preferred option. Here’s why…

Key benefits of regular marijuana seeds for home growers

Regular cannabis seeds allow the grower to produce male plants. These are essential to some traditional growers who prefer to select their own male and females for onward evaluation and possible subsequent breeding. It’s worth noting that whilst experienced growers know exactly what a great female plant looks like, relatively few have much knowledge about the appearance/qualities of a good male plant.

Many amateur and professional breeders begin their breeding projects with regular seeds. Some home growers still prefer to grow from regular seeds, even though it means discarding roughly half their plants.

Despite being the original inventors of feminized seeds, Dutch Passion still retain a full collection of proven, established regular seeds. These are offered as a service to smaller breeders seeking foundation genetics as well as many of the older, original Dutch Passion customers who still prefer to grow from regular seeds.

Regular cannabis seeds growing essential tips

Regular cannabis seeds look the same as any other type of cannabis seeds. They should be germinated in the same way and they will grow through the cannabis vegetative phase normally. But when the plants start to bloom, either indoors or outdoors, you will see a roughly even mix of male and female plants. Unless you are producing your own marijuana seeds, you will need to remove the male plants to prevent them seeding the buds in your female plants.

Best soil / grow medium for regular cannabis seeds

There are no major differences in the soil preferences between male or female plants. Remember, both sexes evolved in nature to cope with similar conditions. Regular cannabis seeds can be grown in all the usual grow mediums, soil, coco, hydroponics etc.

Best nutrients for regular cannabis seeds

Use your normal nutrients, there’s no need to change your nutrient regime simply because you are growing with regular seeds rather than feminized seeds/autoflower seeds.

Best temperature / humidity for regular cannabis seeds

Use your normal grow room conditions. Aim for temperatures around 75-77F with lights on and a few degrees lower with lights off.

Best light schedule for regular cannabis seeds

Again, normal grow room rules apply. Most veg their plants under 18-24 hours of daily light whether growing regular seeds or feminized seeds. In the cannabis bloom phase a 12/12 light cycle is normal. Note that when growing feminized seeds you will be accustomed to seeing female plants nearly all the time. When growing from regular cannabis seeds around half your plants will be male. Usually the males are chopped down and composted unless the grower is deliberately aiming to produce their own seeds.

Best watering schedule for regular cannabis seeds

Water and feed your plants as required. As always, aim to keep your plants in the nutrient and optical sweet-spot from seedling to harvest.

How to grow regular seeds the right way

Buy quality regular seeds with solid genetics from a reputable source and ensure your grow room is as optimized as it can be before the seeds are germinated. LED grow lights are recommended for those aiming to push their regular seeds to their genetic limit. Key to success is keeping your plants thriving with the right levels of light and nutrition at each stage of growth.

How to grow regular cannabis seeds indoors

Avoid the rookie errors of over-watering & over-feeding. Aim to keep your plants in the nutrient and optical sweet spot from regular seed to harvest.

How to grow regular cannabis seeds outdoors

When growing regular seeds outdoors one of the key points is to check for emergence of male plants. These are usually removed unless you are aiming for a deliberately seeded crop - e.g. if you are producing your own marijuana seeds.

Other than that, just follow the normal cultivation principles for outdoor growing. Once your male plants are safely removed you just need to allow the remaining females to ripen and harvest in the normal way.

How to grow regular cannabis seeds in a greenhouse

Regular seed varieties can grow to huge proportions in the warmth & protection offered by a greenhouse. The greenhouse protects your plants from the worst early/late season cold weather as well as any summer storms in-between. Greenhouses can also be fitted with black-out blinds allowing growers to ‘force’ a 12/12 light schedule and start bloom far earlier than normal.

However, some pests, greenfly etc, can spread quickly in a greenhouse without natural predators. Therefore occasional release of beneficial insects in greenhouses (e.g. Ladybugs) can help keep pests under control.

In hot climates, white greenhouse paint can diffuse the light and help reduce temperatures slightly.

Regular cannabis seeds FAQ

For some home growers and many professional breeders, regular marijuana seeds are still their preferred, most ‘natural’ option.

How are regular seeds produced?

Regular seeds can be made simply be having a male and female plant of similar age in close proximity. The seeds produced are themselves regular seeds. These will give rise to roughly equal numbers of male and female offspring.

Why did regular seeds decrease in popularity when feminized seeds and autoflower seeds became available?

A minority of growers still prefer regular seeds over feminized seeds, but the overwhelming majority of cannabis seeds grown today use either autoflower seeds or feminized seeds. The simple reason for this is that most growers, commercial or home growers, don’t want to waste energy, nutrients, effort, grow-room space and time producing male plants.

What are the advantages of regular seeds over feminized seeds?

One small risk with feminized seeds from any supplier is that of hermies. Hermies are usually not a serious or common problem. Growing from regular seeds eliminates that risk, but it comes with its own costs. One of the main drawbacks of regular seeds is the time, effort and grow space spent rearing plants that eventually show themselves to be male.

How to tell the difference between male and female weed seeds?

It simply isn’t possible! Nor can you tell distinguish between autoflower seeds and regular seeds.

How to germinate cannabis regular seeds?

The most reliable methods for germinating any seed type are to

Germinate the cannabis seed directly in the grow medium

Or try try the ultra-reliable damp cotton pad cannabis seed germination method.

The best quality seed banks regularly check germination rates on their seeds. They also cold-store your seeds prior to shipping them for maximum freshness. In general, you should hope for 90%+ germination rates on your seeds.

How long does it take regular seeds to germinate?

Normally 2-3 days but occasionally 1-2 weeks in soil Just like any other cannabis seed type.

How fast do regular seeds grow?

At the same rate as feminized seeds of the same variety. Indica, or indica-leaning hybrids, often have short bushy growth patterns with less vertical growth/internodal stretch than sativa regular seed varieties. The fastest growth comes during early bloom as the plants stretch, especially those with vigorous sativa genetics which can double/triple their height during bloom. Be sure to research your cannabis seed purchases to ensure they suit both you and your grow room.

Once your crop is ready to harvest, follow a few simple guidelines to ensure perfect buds in the jar…
