To many cannabis growers tall, heavy yielding cannabis plants are the ultimate types of cannabis plants. They can be breathtakingly impressive to see, with true XXL yields but they may take some effort and time to grow. An outdoor 13 ft tall monster can be hard to hide from your neighbors, but if you have the space, know-how and the right cannabis seeds then there is something quite remarkable about seeing a truly giant cannabis plant take shape.
Average height of feminized vs autoflowering cannabis
The tallest cannabis plants can take many months to reach full size. This means you may need a mild climate with a long growing season. The longer life cycle of plants grown from photoperiod feminized cannabis seeds tends to suit those growers wanting to grow the tallest and biggest plants possible.
Depending on the cannabis genetics, your plants may reach 6.5-10 feet tall, or more. Often those growing the tallest plants tend to be outdoor growers with private grow locations. Indoor growers often tend to have height restrictions from their indoor grow tents and tend to use grow techniques (SCROG, Super cropping, topping etc.) to manage and restrict vertical growth.
Plants grown from autoflower seeds tend to be shorter, bushier and more compact than those grown photoperiod feminized seeds. Typically, autoflower plants reach around a meter tall, outdoors some may be able to reach nearer 5 ft. However, autoflowers in general are shorter, stockier and more compact than photoperiod strains.
Note that most autoflower strains grow from seed to harvest in around 10-11 weeks (maybe a couple of weeks longer outdoors). Given the short autoflower life cycle, it simply isn't realistic to expect them to reach the same sizes as the tallest photoperiod cannabis strains.

Tallest Dutch Passion cannabis strains
This selection of the tallest cannabis strains are all photoperiod feminized cannabis seeds. For the tallest plants you may wish to consider a few additional tips which may allow you a fully optimized approach:
• Starting your plants indoors with a couple of weeks/months of pre-growth allows your plants a head-start before they are put outdoors. Use of quality LED light is the best way to encourage a healthy, vigorous start.
• Ensure a grow location which allows an extensive root network to form. Moist, good quality soil is essential. If local soil quality is poor supplement with supermarket/grow-shop soil and fertilizers. Slow-release organic nutrients such as BioTabs are recommended for a steady release of essential nutrients throughout the grow.
• Select a location with ample direct sunshine throughout the day. If possible, some shelter from the prevailing wind may help, as will a nearby water source if severe drought necessitates manual watering. The following US climate guide offers some useful tips for outdoor growers in the US.
• A grow location that allows an easy start to your season and a late finish will support the long grow cycles necessary to grow the tallest cannabis strains. For those with short growing seasons but ambitions to grow the biggest strains a tall greenhouse is a great way to extend the growing season. This protects your plants from the worst of the early/late season weather allowing them to complete a long grow cycle in optimized conditions.

Outdoor growers who can keep Desfrán in optimized health from feminized cannabis seed to harvest can expect exceptional quality sativa buds with a soaring, psychedelic high.
Note: Desfrán is such a tall strain that she can be seen from quite some distance, especially in urban settings. If vertical growth gets out of control, whether growing indoors or outdoors, then super cropping the taller branches is a good way to maintain a shorter plant stature.

Amsterdam Amnesia: THC rich plants can approach 13 ft tall

Amnesia strains use professional grade sativa genetics to deliver notoriously powerful and potent effects. Amsterdam Amnesia delivers this with plants that can reach around 10-13 ft tall in good outdoor conditions. Yields on the largest plants are indeed exceptionally heavy and can comfortably exceed 2.2 lbs per plant when grown well.
If growing this outdoors, ensure some good quality, nutrient-rich soil and water frequently in mid-summer to allow her to reach her full genetic potential. If you plan to grow an Amnesia this year, remember that the best Amnesia strains always come from Amsterdam!
Note: If you are trying to grow tall cannabis strains indoors and struggling for space then you may wish to consider using a grow technique such as the SCROG method (Screen of Green). Some growers also implement the SCROG method when growing tall strains outdoors. This will allow you to manage the growth more effectively with less vertical stretch.

Durban Poison: Expect 10 ft+ plants with heavy yields and superb effects

Durban Poison is a legendary South African sativa strain which can be grown indoors or outdoors with high-end results and heavy yields. This is a strain with a stellar reputation for all the right reasons. The sativa dominant plants grow quickly and are well adapted to outdoor conditions.
Repeat growers, of which there are literally thousands, adore the stress-busting effects and the blissfully pleasurable feel-good high. Durban Poison is still one of the more popular strains available in dispensaries and coffee shops. Get your grow conditions optimized, and you can be admiring a 10 ft+ tall outdoor monster this summer!
Note: When growing indoors/outdoors the tallest part of the plant is usually the tip of the main central bloom. If this is cut off (indoors or outdoors) it is known as ‘topping’ and produces a shorter, bushier plant. If you find that your Durban Poison is getting a tiny bit too large for your liking, then this technique is recommended.

Other tips for growing cannabis strains with extreme height
Growing tall cannabis strains isn't that difficult if you start with the right cannabis seeds. Often, but not always, it’s the sativa (or sativa dominant) strains which can stretch a little more than the others and produce towering plants.
To grow the tallest plants, remember to offer unrestricted root space and good quality soil which you can enrich with suitable levels of fertilizer, soil improvers and/or slow-release nutrients if required. Growing plants in containers tends to limit the final plant size. For that reason, those that grow the largest plants often prefer to root their plants directly into well-prepared ground.
If growing in a greenhouse you may also wish to provide supplemental artificial lighting to ensure maximized growth rates even on cloudy days. Very few indoor growers have the space to grow a 13 ft tall monster, but if you do have a large indoor warehouse to grow tall plants in you will need ample lighting.
Those that specialize in growing the tallest/largest plants work hard to ensure optimized conditions from cannabis seed through to harvest. They also often have a long (outdoor) growing season that allows their plants to be harvested in late October/early November in the Northern Hemisphere (Late April/early May in Southern Hemisphere). The long growing season can be enhanced by a month or two of indoor pre-growth on your plants before they are placed outdoors.
